Our story
Bringing the ancient world north
A small group of volunteers with one aim: to make sure nobody in the North of Scotland has to travel far to hear about Homer, Cicero or the Parthenon.
Our roots
Part of a Scottish network
We are the Aberdeen and North of Scotland Centre of the Classical Association of Scotland, one of several local centres that bring classical talks to communities across the country.

Becoming a charity
The Centre was registered as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation, giving it its own legal identity and a clear charitable purpose.
Talks, in person and online
Reaching further
Our lecture series runs on the King's College campus of the University of Aberdeen, and online, so people across the Highlands and Islands can join from home.
In schools
The next generation
We take the classics into local schools, giving pupils a first taste of ancient languages, myth and history.

The Classics Lottery
With a yearly income of under £400, our programme depends on goodwill. The lottery gives us a small, steady income to plan more talks, invite more speakers and visit more schools.
Why classics matters
The languages, literature, politics and philosophy of Greece and Rome shaped the words we speak, the laws we live by and the stories we keep retelling. Studying them sharpens how we read, argue and think.
Fewer schools now teach Latin or classical studies, especially outside the big cities. A free talk, an online lecture or a visit to a classroom can be someone's only chance to meet these subjects, and sometimes the start of a lifelong interest.
